(Two views of independent thinking)

Yang Yang

Edward’s talk (Six Hats)

Edward’s talk is not very hard for me to follow, but there are still some academic words that I’m not very sure about them. Therefore, I took some notes about the keywords and main ideas, which could help me to understand the talk much better.

After listening to this talk, I learnt the importance of ‘possibilities’ and the purpose of thinking is not only to find the truth but also to create value, to change and make things better.

During this talk, Edward de Bono also mentioned a very interesting theory – Six Hats, which main point is the process of focusing and changing ideas. At the same time,it encourage people to create and to thinking critical.

Thinking Critically

The core of Chaffee’ s article is that  people’s views may be related to learning or experience at first, but as they grow up, people who think independently are not only simply accepting the views of others ,but also using some standards and evidences to prove and response to some questions .

People usually evaluate questions critically from 4 different aspects: authorities, references, factual evidence and personal experience. It is also a process of balancing individual’s views and those of others, and integrating individual perspectives into social structures.
